ITEM TITLE: Healthy Homes Month (June 2018) SUMMARY: SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Healthy Homes Month Proclamation Supporting Documentation THE CITY OF UB E Masterpiece on the Mississippi Whereas, home health and safety hazards, including physical safety hazards, lead-based paint, radon, mold, pests, and allergens, cause or contribute to a wide range of illnesses and diseases, including lead poisoning, asthma, cancer, and injuries; and Whereas, lead poisoning affects hundreds of Dubuque's children under six; and the City of Dubuque has made 1,256 homes lead safe to date, and Whereas, home accidents, improperly stored chemicals, carbon monoxide, mold and other indoor contaminants, and safety hazards cause injury and adverse health effects to Dubuque citizens every year; and Whereas, water intrusion/mold growth, lead paint, electrical, and falls on stairs are the most commonly observed healthy homes hazards in Dubuque; and Whereas, many of Dubuque's families are unaware that their homes have health hazards; and Whereas, education and awareness about the dangers of unhealthy or unsafe housing can save the lives of many citizens of the City of Dubuque. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF JUNE 2016 AS "HEALTHY HOMES MONTH" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND ASK CITIZENS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO OBSERVE THIS MONTH WITH APPROPRIATE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO ENHANCE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF HOME HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARDS AND THE WAYS WE CAN PROTECT OUR FAMILIES FROM THESE HAZARDS.
