LibraryBoard ofTrustees Update
From theMeering ofJuly 26, 2018
Present: Christy Monk, Vice-President; Pat Maddux Secretary; and Trustees, Robert
Armstrong, Greg Gorton, Rosemary Kramer, and Pam Mullin
Excused: Patty Poggemiller, President
• The Library Board of Trustees approved expenditures.
• The Library Board of Trustees approved an updated Social Media Policy
• June marks the end of Fiscal Year 2018. Expenses came in under budget by
nearly 5%, or $168,739.00. Some carry over requests for the operating budget
will be requested and if approved, this figure will decrease some. Revenue came
in at 3% over projections, or $3,543.00. Overall, an excellent budget year and
the 16'h consecutive year that the library has been under budget.
• The Library Foundation was awarded a $2,000 grant from the McDonough
Foundation to help fill the revenue gap caused by the six-month fine free
experiment. The Foundation will include a discussion of options for funding the
projected decrease in revenue during its next meeting in August.
• Overall, there has been improvement in items out and past due when comparing
a day in January and a day in July. The snapshot shows the number of items that
are checked out, whether the day before or five years ago. 80% of all items were
within the checkout period in January, which was the snapshot before the fine
free experiment. The second snapshot was July 19. 83% of all items were within
the checkout period, which supports anecdotal evidence that more past due
items were being returned. Other results:
o The number of items that were overdue more than 60 days on January 10
reflected 16% of all items out
o The number of items that were overdue more than 60 days on July 19
reflected 11% of all items out
• This is significant and has a positive budget impact. When items
are unreturned replacement copies are often purchased.
o The number of items past due 8 - 21 days increased in July by just two
tenths of a percent.
• Next month will provide a picture of howthe blocking of accounts impacts
returns. Items checked out on June 10 were due July 1 and if they were not
returned by July 15 the accounts were blocked.
• The Bike Library has been very successful! People are excited about it and
eager to check it out wherever it stops. It has received a great deal of positive
publicity in the media as well. It debuted June 11 and went to 11 locations.
Through July 18 the bike library visited 12 locations and checkouts from the bike
library totaled 285. DuTrac Community Credit Union has offered to sponsor the
bike library. This generosity will help keep the bike library stocked with current
best-selling books.
• The June campaign featured $400+ prize giveaway for interacting with C-SPL.
We should expect to see increases in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Overdrive,
Freegal, and Flipster. Results follow:
o OverDrive (e-books and e-audio) — 16% increase over same time last
year, which was also the highest use since the service began.
o Freegal (downloadable music) — Up 37% compared to June 2017 and up
2.2% compared to the highest year 2015
o Flipster (digital magazines) — Up 111% compared to June 2017 and a
35% increase from the highest year (2014)
o Facebook - New likes up 442% compared to June 2017; Reach up 12%
compared to June 2017 and engaged users up 51% since June 2017
o Twitter- New followers increased 44.7% compared to June 2017. No
change in link clicks compared to June 2017
o Instagram— New likes increased 96% compared to June, 2017
