Narrative Description: The building of interest is on the southwest corner of Washington and E. 19th streets. It is a two story brick side gable storefront that fronts onto Washington. It's plan measures 36x24. A rear and much later addition (36.6x77.6) is behind and west of it. This building is dated to 1890 by the Assessor but it appears to be much earlier in origin. This is indicated by a rubble stone foundation and the use of semi-elliptical double rowlock brick window arches. The storefront is brick framed. There is a chance that this is a replacement of a cast iron original but the present arrangement allows for both transom and full length storewindows, which a replacement would not. The brickwork appears to be a doble wall construction given the lack of rowlock courses. The second building, while similarly dated to 1890, is of much later date. Its original core (24x61) has also been supplemented with a rear addition (44.6x39.6). This building is non-contributing and is of no historical interest. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: This commercial property is of German vernacular origin and is a contributing property within a district. Additional research is needed to identify its history and builder. It is potentially a very early commercial property and its form, as a corner storefront, is of particular interest. Pending further information, no individual determination of historical signficance is offered at this time. The 1891 and 1909 Sanborn Map show a combination dwelling (south third), storefront (north two-thirds) which fronts onto Washington Street. There is a rear single story addition in the southwest corner and a rear stairway. The 1902 city directory lists J. E. Doerrer at 1895 Washington, and Arthur Reynolds, Charles Hos and the "B[rotherhood] of R T Hall" here as of 1911. No further listings approximate this address. 9.
