LibraryBoard ofTrustees Update
From theMeering ofSeptember 26, 2018
Present: Patty Poggemiller, President; Christy Monk, Vice-President and Trustees,
Robert Armstrong, Greg Gorton, Rosemary Kramer, Pat Maddux, and Pam Mullin
. August marks 17°k of the fiscal year lapsing. Expenditures were at 18°k
and revenue collected at 11°k. The Board approved expenditures.
. Snapshot of past due materials shows 16,451 items checked out with
79.5°k within the checkout period and 20.5°k overdue. At this time the
number of past due items is in the expected range based on what other
libraries have experienced that have adopted a no fine policy. Past dues
within a shorter timeframe are up, but the long overdue items (over 60
days) are down. Long overdue items represented 16°k of the past dues
prior to the fine free period and currently are at 14.2°k.
. Compared to August 2017, the number of checkouts were 4°k lower, but
the number of visitors to the library is up 1 °k. The number of new library
accounts opened was up 17°k compared to August of 2017. Computer
use is down among adult users at 3°k, but the decrease among teen and
children was 20°k and 42°k respectively. Adult programs were a hit in
August and included three author visits. Attendance to adult programs
increased 94°k compared to programs last August. Similarly, while
checkouts of children's materials was lower than the same time last year,
program attendance in August numbered 1 ,014, which is a 22°k increase
compared to August of 2017. Overall activity mimics what other libraries of
similar size in lowa have experienced.
. Red Rokk continued its promotion of e-books and e-audio during the
month of August. An increase in checkouts of these materials as well as
new library accounts should be expected as a result. The campaign
appears to have been successful! New library card signups increased
17°k compared to last August. Both e-books and e-audio checkouts were
up 23.3°k compared to August of 2017. Individually, e-book checkouts
increased 16°k and e-audio was up 34°k compared to August of 2017.
. Compared to August of 2017, social media numbers increased as well,
with Facebook showing a 351°k increase and Twitter with a 571 °k
increase. Instagram numbers were up 103°k compared to the same time
last year.
. The Library has been reorganized and has eliminated the Technical
Services Activity. Work performed under this Activity will be shared among
three other Activities: Adult Services, Circulation Services, and Information
Technology Services.
. The Board approved the updated Trustee By-Laws and Policy.
. The Board approved pursuing several ideas for marketing in 2019. Red
Rokk's estimate for 2019 was near $57,000. The company will be asked if
they can work on a month-to-month basis. Inquiries to local companies will
be made for comparison quotes and an advertisement placed for a part-
time staff inember to focus on marketing. The Board can fully review the
options at an upcoming meeting.
