Gateway Signage ProgramMEMORANDUM April 2, 2003 TO Mayor and City Council Members FROM: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager SUBJECT: Gateway signage Paul Hemmer and Gary Olsen of the Dubuque Rotary Club have approached the City about initiating a Community Gateway Signage Program. Attached is a rendering of the proposed signage that would be located on public property along highway systems entering Dubuque. As depicted, these signs would be 23' in length and constructed with a cut limestone and brick base, brick columns with wrought iron light fixtures similar to those used on the Main Street renovation and a large, rough-hewn piece of limestone with a polished face. Engraved into this limestone would be the name of our city and attached would be black, powder-coated steel formed to match the America's River logo. The estimated cost to construct these signs is $22,000 or a total of $110,000 for all five signs. The Dubuque Rotary board of directors has made a commitment to sponsor the cost of one sign and would like to place the first sign on highways 151/61 near the Dubuque Technology Park. In addition, they have agreed to work with other organizations to obtain sponsorships for the remaining four signs. This has included submitting a recent grant application to the Dubuque Racing Association for two signs. The Dubuque Rotary club has requested the City Council provide input on the design and location of the signs and to approve their request to undertake the entry sign project. I respectfully request Mayor and City Council direction on this issue.
