Re: Recommendation to name the Housing and Community Development Department
Conference Room after Ann Michalski
Dear Mayor and City Council:
In 2017, the Housing Commission had been in discussions regarding our desire to
provide a memorial for Ann O'Hara Michalski. This discussion was prompted due to
Ann's long time service as a member of both the Housing Commission and Community
Development Advisory Commission. Due to her service and her fierce advocacy for
affordable housing and our community's neighborhoods, the Housing Commission
voted unanimously to recommend to City Council that the Housing and Community
Development Conference Room be named for Ann Michalski. In addition, the
Community Development Advisory Commission also voted unanimously to recommend
to the City Council that the conference room be named after Ann Michalski.
The Commission voted to form a committee to develop a plan for naming the
conference room. Committee members included former Commission Chair Rick
Baumhover, Commission Member Sr. Dorothy Schwendinger, and staff person Jerelyn
O'Connor. The Committee finalized the wording for the dedication plaque which was
approved by the Housing Commission. Attached is a copy of the dedication plaque. It
is our intent that there will be a dedication ceremony at a later date.
In 2018, a "Friends of Ann Michalski" committee privately raised the funds to pay for the
dedication plaque.
The Housing Commission and Community Development Advisory Commission believe
that naming the Conference Room for Ann Michalski is an appropriate way to honor
Ann's significant contributions to the Dubuque Community. Thank you for your
consideration of this request.
