Van Milligen, City Manager SUBJECT: Cummins Street Retaining Wall Reconstruction Project DATE: November 28, 2018 City Engineer Gus Psihoyos is recommending acceptance of the construction contract for the Cummins Street Retaining Wall Reconstruction Project, as completed by Drew Cook & Sons Excavating, Inc., in the final contract amount of$97,664.52, which is an increase from the original contract amount of$93,591 .50. The additional cost is primarily due to the addition of a black pipe railing along the wall. BACKGROUND The Cummins Street Retaining Wall Reconstruction Project provided for the removal of an existing concrete retaining wall and replaced with a new modular redi-rock retaining wall. This modular block wall simulates a natural limestone look at less cost with faster installation. The length of the retaining wall is approximately 121 LF. The project also included a railing, 165 LF of new curb and gutter, sidewalk and replacement of an ADA ramp. DISGUSSION The Cummins Street Retaining Wall Reconstruction Project was completed by Drew Cook & Sons Excavating, Inc. of Dubuque, lowa, in the final contract amount of $97,664.52, which is an increase from the original contract in the amount of $93,591.50. The additional cost is primarily due to the addition of a black pipe railing along the wall. RECOMMENDATION I recommend that the City Council accept the improvements and authorize the payment of the contract amount of $97,664.52 to Drew �ook & Sons Excavating, Co., Inc. for the Cummins Street Retaining Wall Reconstruction Project. GNP:kb Attachments cc: Jenny Larson, Budget Director Bob Schiesl, Assistant City EnginPer 2 RESOLUTION NO. 356-18 ACCEPTING THE CUMMINS STREET RETAINING WALL RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT AND AUTHORIZING THE PAYMENT TO THE CONTRACTOR WHEREAS, the public improvement contract for the Cummins Street Retaining Wall Reconstruction Project (the Project) has been completed by the Contractor, Drew Cook & Sons Excavating, Co., Inc. (Contractor), the City Engineer has examined the work and recommends that the Project be accepted; and WHEREAS, the final contract amount for the Project is $97,664.52; and WHEREAS, the Contractor has previously been paid $83,008.64, leaving a balance of $14,655.88; and WHEREAS, the City Council finds that the recommendation of the City Engineer should be accepted. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA THAT: Section 1. The recommendation of the City Engineer is approved, and the Project is hereby accepted. Section 2. The Finance Director is hereby directed to pay to the Contractor the balance of the retainage of $14,655.88 as provided in Iowa Code Chapter 573, and to pay such retainage in accordance with the provisions of Iowa Code Chapter 573 or Iowa Code Chapter 26.13.
