Van Milligen, City Manager FROM: Gus Psihoyos, City Engineer DATE: January 26, 2010 SUBJECT: Kerper Boulevard Storm Sewer Project CIP 7201806 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memo is to recommend acceptance of the public improvements and authorize payment to the contractor for the Kerper Boulevard Storm Sewer Project. BACKGROUND The Kerper Boulevard Storm Sewer Project included the extension of approximately 650 lineal feet of 15" reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) and the construction of three intakes to help alleviate ponding during heavy rain events in the Kerper Boulevard corridor. The project provided Bradley Iron Works and Hawkeye Boat Sales access to the public storm sewer so that they can resolve their respective private drainage issues. DISCUSSION The Kerper Boulevard Storm Sewer Project was completed by McDermott Excavating Co. of Dubuque, Iowa, in the final contract amount of $75,489.53, which is a 31.0% increase from the original contract amount of $57,611.20. The cost increase was due to the use of additional bedding material based on soil conditions and the additional pavement required to satisfactorily complete the project. RECOMMENDATION I recommend that the City Council accept the improvements and authorize payment of the contract amount of $75,489.53 to McDermott Excavating Co. of Dubuque, Iowa, for the Kerper Boulevard Storm Sewer Project. The recommendation of the City Engineer is approved and the Project is hereby accepted. Section 2. The Finance Director is hereby directed to pay to the Contractor from the Kerper Boulevard Storm Sewer Extension and Storm Sewer Improvements /Extensions appropriations for the contract amount of $75,489.53 less any retained percentage provided for therein as provided in Iowa Code chapter 573, and to pay such retainage only in accordance with the provisions of Iowa Code chapter 573.
