Logo Design Grand River CtrMEMORANDUM
April 16, 2003
TO:The Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager
SUBJECT: Logo design for Grand River Center
A logo design committee consisting of Jim Rix from Platinum Hospitality, Sue
Czeshinski of the Dubuque Convention and Visitors Bureau, Public Information Officer
Susan Gwiasda and Assistant City Manager Cindy Steinhauser has been working with
McCullough Creative Group to develop a colored logo for the Grand River Center. The
logo will be used on all promotional material and business forms as well as be located
on the building exterior. Two design options were selected by the committee. Design
option #1 was unanimously chosen by the committee for the artwork, which accurately
depicts the building design, coordinates well with the Iogos for the Grand Harbor Resort
and Waterpark and the National Mississippi Museum and Aquarium and the ability for
the artwork to stand alone without text.
Three-color options were also considered by the committee. The design committee
unanimously chose color option #1 which will work well with various marketing
materials, matches the colors used in the architecture of the Grand River Center and
are color selections that will last over time.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

SUBJECT: Logo design for Grand River Center
Introduction
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you information regarding the process
used to recommend a logo design for the Grand River Center and to request City
Council approval of the recommendation.
Backround
On December 16, 2002 a Request for Proposals (RFP) was sent to local design firms to
solicit their bids for the design of the identity package for this facility. This identity
package would include such items as logo, business card and letterhead design. On
February 3, 2003, the City Council approved the recommendation to hire McCullough
Creative Group.
Discussion
A logo design committee consisting of Jim Rix from Platinum Hospitality, Sue
Czeshinski of the Dubuque Convention and Visitors Bureau, Public Information Officer
Susan Gwiasda and myself has been working with McCullough Creative Group to
develop a colored logo for the Grand River Center. The logo will be used on all
promotional material and business forms as well as be located on the building exterior.
The process used by the committee to make a recommendation included: 1 ) review of
thumbnail sketches to determine visual preference; 2) narrow selection to two designs;
3) review black and white versions of two design options and narrow to one design; 4)
review color options for final design and make recommendation. Attached are the two
design options that were selected by the committee, based upon review by the
committee there was consensus to recommend design option #1. This design was
unanimously chosen by the committee for the artwork, which accurately depicts the
building design, coordinates well with the Iogos for the Grand Harbor Resort and
Waterpark and the National Mississippi Museum and Aquarium and the ability for the
artwork to stand alone without text.
Also attached are the three-color options that were considered by the committee. The
design committee unanimously chose color option #1 which will work well with various
marketing materials, matches the colors used in the architecture of the Grand River
Center and are color selections that will last over time.
Due to the variations in computer and printer colors, I am also attaching a hard copy
(attachment A) of the pantone matching system (PMS) color to provide City Council will
a true depiction of the color recommendation.
Action
The requested action is for City Council to approve the recommended logo design and
