ITEM TITLE: Bike to Work& School Days/Week (May 7 & 8, 13-19, 2019) SUMMARY: SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Bike to Work Days/Week Proclamation Supporting Documentation THE CITY OF UB E Masterpiece on the Mississippi Whereas, the bicycle has proven to be a utilitarian, economical, environmentally sound and effective means of personal transportation, recreation and fitness; and Whereas, the City of Dubuque, lowa encourages the use of bicycles as a means of transportation; and recognizes the bicycle as a legitimate roadway vehicle and therefore is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roadway facilities except highways constructed to interstate standards; and Whereas, the City of Dubuque encourages the increased use of bicycle as a viable mode of transportation, benefiting all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing the use of and dependence upon finite energy sources, and fostering physical fitness and mental health; and Whereas, the Tri-State Trail Vision Plan, Sustainable Dubuque vision, the Dubuque Bik Coop, and other community initiatives and organizations are coordinating efforts to make Dubuque a more Bicycle Friendly Community for all citizens; and Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established May as National Bicycle Month, May 7 as National Bike to Work Day, May 8 as National Bike to School Day and May 13 through May 19 as Bike to Work Week. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF MAY 13-19, 2019 AS "B I KE TO WO RK WE E K" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND FURTHER RECOGNIZE MAY 7, 2019 AT BIKE TO WORK DAY; AND MAY 8, 2019 AS BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY.
