I, Experience or education Over the course of the last 50 years, I have worked tirelessly to la which qualifies you for this make the arts an important part of our community. In 1968 after i board or commission: graduating from Clarke College with a degree in Speech and Theater, I took a position with the City of Dubuque's Recreation II ; Department as Fine Arts Coordinator, a position I held for six years. After two years of producing plays at Eagle Point Park, I 'i oversaw the renovation of the barn at Flora Park and founded the Barn Community Theater. For the next 15 years I produced ! plays and musicals that gave local performers, young and oid, the opportunities to show off their talents and gave lacal audiences thousands of hours of enjoyment. In 1986 I oversaw , the company's move to the Grand Opera House and spent I! another 15 years directing and producing plays and musicals , for Dubuque and the surrounding area. Then, in 2003 I became I; Artistic Director and Theater Manager of the brand new Bell Tower Theater, which is now one of our city's most popular live theaters. Simultaneously, I taught communications, speech and theater at Hempstead High School from 1974 to 2012. What contributions can you Since graduating from Clarke, I have always been an advocate make or state reason for for artists and for the arts community. I have volunteered in applying? many capacities that help promote the arts in Dubuque and throughout the State of lowa. I have served as a member of the lowa Arts Council Board of Directors, the lowa Film Commission and have been on the Dubuque Arts and Cultural Commission since its inception, inciuding serving as chair twice. While a member of the Film Commission, I responded to a request from Universal Studios for a location for a new movie. I spent several weekends driving throughout Dubuque z County and taking photographs of farm houses. It was because of one of these photographs that the Academy Award-winning movie "Field of Dreams"was filmed in Dubuque County. I have a strong desire to continue to serve on the commission at this ! crucial point in time. Not only is it important that we sustain the i valuable programming that we have developed but there is much work to be done in implementing the Cultural Arts Master ' Plan. j Describe your experience I have spent my entire career in diverse environments. As a {J working in diverse public school educator teaching courses that were required for { environments: all students, I consistently had a classroom of high schoolers that were diverse in both culture and ability. In addition my 50 years of directing plays and musicals means that I have lead I! countless productions with diverse groups of performers and !I technicians. As a theater administrator it is myjob to design 'i programming that appeals to a diverse audience. I also served I' as chair of the Board of Directors of St. Mark Community !,yi Center(now St. Mark Youth Enrichment)for four years, and 'I continue to work with them in my role at the Bell Tower Theater. Describe ourex erience Y p My experience with community engagement began as a engaging other community teenager through my work with the Davenport Children's members to gather their g p i Theatre. This mission lead me to create partnerships, II many of which still exist today. I was a founding member of the Dubuque Arts Council. I was founder of the Barn Community N Theater. I brought the Arts Council, the Dubuque County Historical Society, the Barn Community Theater, Dubuque j Symphony Orchestra, the Dubuque Museum of Art and Clarke College together to create the ArtsTrek program, which still f brings arts and artists in direct contact with elementary school students. My work with the lowa Arts Council Board of Directors, the lowa Film Commission and the Dubuque Arts and Cultural Commission have all put me a position to advocate for the arts on behalf of my city and state.
