Whereas, Sister Cities International was founded as a Presidential initiative by President Dwight
D. Eisenhower on September 11, 1956 at the White House Conference on citizen
diplomacy to create more community-led global relationships so that people of different
cultures could appreciate their differences and build partnerships that would lessen the
chance of new national conflicts; and
Whereas, Sister Cities International celebrates 63 years of global citizen and civic diplomatic
action, by helping support a future where the world's cities, communities and its citizens
can come together on common ground; and
Whereas. the Sister Cities International network hosts over 2,300 events and engages nearly
33,000 volunteers throughout the U.S. These relationships include educational,
economic, cultural, municipal and humanitarian assistance exchange programs that are
mutually beneficial to each community; and
Whereas, the City of Dubuque is proud to be a part of this global network through partnerships
with our Sister Cities of Pyatigorsk, Russia; Handan, China; and Dornbirn, Austria.
NOW THEREFORE, I, JAKE RIOS, MAYOR PRO TEM OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIMTHE 15T" DAYOFJULY2019AS
"SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL DAY"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, IN DEMONSTRATION OF HOW POWERFUL HUMANITY CAN
BE WHEN WE UNITE TO PROMOTE PEACE, PROGRESS AND PROSPERITY FOR A BETTER
WORLD.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
