Checkouts were up 9%, visits up 7%, and the Maker Space demonstrated eatraordinary growth along with downloadable materials. The one activity that was low was the number of new library card signups, which averaged six per day. This average is typically higher, with at least nine per day, and can exceed 11 per day. The Summer Reading Program launched on June 10 for all ages and may generate an increase in the number of new cards issued. • The WhisperRoom is popular despite a soft opening. It has been used nearly every day. Marketing the WhisperRoom will begin when the door to the room arrives and is installed. Originally, an eaterior door to the room was not planned, but we believe it is necessary to offer the greatest level of sound deadening. The door will have a window and lock from the outside only. • The Bike Library is temporarily off road. The Bike Library was at Flora Pool on Friday evening, June 7. A truck was used to bring the bike library to the venue because this is a difficult uphill ride, without the addition of 250#. At the end of the event, the bike was loaded onto the truck, which was on a hill. When the truck accelerated, the bike, which was disproportionately heavy, flipped backward, completely out of the truck. Fortunately, no one was injured. Repairs are nearly complete and the bike will be out on the road by July 5. • Former Board Member, David Hammer, left a bequest of$10,000 to the Carnegie-Stout Public Library with the provision that it be used to supplement library programs and services and not replace city funds. David had a passion for the arts and in the 1980s led the first appraisal and accessioning of library-owned works of art. The Board will consider dedicating the gift for the preservation of the library's works of art that are on display as well as contracting for appraisals of all of the art. • Discussion took place on replacing the eaterior banners with a new look. Amanda Dolter is working on the design of banners that will feature the library's new campaign of"Open." • The Board heard a presentation by Dr. Christopher Budzisz from the Loras College Center for Public Research as he discussed the results of the community survey. Overall, the respondents viewed the public library as an essential service in Dubuque and their level of satisfaction with the library is high. Respondents reported interest in expanding library service to the west side of town. Responses to the options for funding this service were varied; however, the strongest response was for a public-private partnership, or private. The Board will review the feasibility of expanded library services at some point in the future, as it prepares for a new strategic plan.
