WHEREAS, the issue of peace embraces the deepest hopes of all peoples, and remains
humanity's guiding inspiration; In 1981, the United Nations proclaimed the
International Day of Peace be "devoted to commemorating and strengthening the
ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples;" and
WHEREAS, the United Nations expanded the observance of the International Day of Peace in
2001 to include the call for a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, and invited all
nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day of
Peace; and
WHEREAS, there is growing support within our nation for the observance of the International Day
of Peace, including a group of Dubuque-area residents inviting all to create a culture
of peace by participating in a city-wide celebration from Tuesday, September 17 to
Sunday, September 29, focusing on non-violent conflict resolution; and
WHEREAS, local and global violence impels all citizens to work toward converting humanity's
noblest aspirations for world peace into a practical reality. It is possible to see our
community and world turn from violent to nonviolent solutions within our lifetimes; and
WHEREAS, the Dubuque Day of Peace organizing committee's 2019 focus will be on "Women
and Peace: Many Voices, Many Languages" with a performance by Magdalena
Gomez on Sunday, September 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the Alumni Campus Center at
Loras College.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE DO HEREBY
RECOGNIZE THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE AND PROCLAIM SEPTEMBER 17 TO 29,
2019 AS:
DAYS OF PEACE AND NONVIOLENCE
IN DUBUQUE, IOWAAND CALL UPON THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE TO FURTHERAFFIRM A
VISION OF OUR WORLD AT PEACE BY FOSTERING COOPERATION BETWEEN

Author, award-winning performance poet,
and arts activist Magdalena Gomez will perform
stories from her life and work. Raised in violence,
brutalized, raped and silenced, Gomez has
dedicated her life to interrupting violence
and promoting self-determination through
compassionate, inter -generational resistance,
community building and embracing differences
by first welcoming the stranger within. Gomez
is the co-founder and artistic director ofTeatro
Vida, the first Latin@ theater in Springfield, Mass.,
founder of the Ferocious Women's Group, and
author of Shameless Woman (2014).

arts activist Magdalena Gomez is the opening
event of the museum's new week-long humanities

community Barbeque is an event where residents
can bond and engage with different cultures
through free food catered from a variety of
local vendors. A live DJ will play family -friendly
music and there will be activities. Community
organizations, Not-for-profit groups, and Businesses
can have free tables to hand out information. More
