Proclamation_Julien Dubuque 200th Anniversary 2010
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Julien Dubuque, the first permanent settler to the area, died 200
years ago on March 24, 1810; and
WHEREAS, Julien Dubuque, a French-Canadian fur trader who traveled here
after having heard of the land’s rich lead deposits, befriended the
Mesquakie in the area, and worked with them to mine the lead; and
WHEREAS, Julien Dubuque was a trusted and respected friend of the Mesquakie
and was given control of the lead mines, which he named the Mines
of Spain, and successfully operated until his death; and
WHEREAS, Julien Dubuque left such a legacy that when the area was chartered
27 years after his death in 1837, it was officially named after him; and
WHEREAS, Julien Dubuque recognized the area as a “Masterpiece on the
Mississippi,” and in choosing to settle upon its banks, helped to
attract other settlers who referred to Dubuque as the “Key City,”— a
place where the door to their dreams of a better life was opened.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA,
ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO
HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 24TH OF MARCH, 2010, AS
“THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF JULIEN DUBUQUE’S DEATH”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have
hereunto set my hand and caused the
Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to
be affixed this 24th day of March,
2010.
