Dear Honorable Mayor, City Council members, City Manager,
I submit the enclosed documents as a petition from my neighbors and I on
Sunset Ridge to support a request to be heard at the March 15 City Council
meeting. There is unanimous desire for a narrowed street with no sidewalks
when Sunset Ridge is reconstructed. Even the couple of neighbors who are
wintering down south support this position, but were unable to get original
documents signed this week.
A precedent has been set on Wartburg Place, where it was determined that a
sidewalk on only one side was acceptable for a neighborhood that has student
housing and a higher level of traffic. Once you enter the historic stone columns
that define Sunset Ridge, the traffic count goes down significantly. Few other
neighborhoods in the City have this unique setting that called into question its
very status as a public street or private drive. It retains the "private drive" feel
that was laid down almost 100 years ago. Many of the large trees close to the
street are irreplaceable treasures that date from that time. Their preservation is
paramount.
The street is a favorite walking path for many residents and neighbors beyond.
While the improvemet of the street surface will make walking friendlier, the
continued low level of vehicular traffic warrants no sidewalks, to maximize the
natural beauty of the neighborhood we all appreciate. Even with no curbs,
there are rarely any vehicles parked on the street, mostly lawn service contrac-
tors. Even with their big trailers, they are never an unmanagable obstacle. Traffic
count is unlikely to ever go up. We certainly feel no need for a street wide
enough for two lanes of traffic and a parking lane.
