WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer has become one of our time's most devastating diseases; and
WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer has surpassed breast cancer to become the third leading cause of
cancer deaths in the United States and is projected to become the second leading
cause by the year 2025; and
WHEREAS, in 2019, an estimated 56,770 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the
United States with nearly 45,750 succumbing to the disease; and
WHEREAS, when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is generally in later stages,
and only 10°k of pancreatic cancer patients are diagnosed when the disease is confined
to their pancreas and 91 °k of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years of
diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a five-year relative survival rate in the
single digits at just 9°k; and it is the 7�h most common cause of cancer-related death in
men and women across the world; and
WHEREAS, it is projected that approximately 600 lowans will be diagnosed, and 480 deaths will
occur in lowa in 2019 with an estimated 418,000 new pancreatic cancer cases
diagnosed worldwide in 2020; and
WHEREAS, the long-term health and well-being of the residents of Dubuque are enhanced as a
direct result of increased awareness about pancreatic cancer and ongoing research into
early detection, causes, and effective, comprehensive treatments.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF
OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM
THE 21ST DAY OF NOVEMBER 2019 AS
"PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS DAY"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Dubuque to be affixed this 4th day of November 2019.
