WHEREAS, the City of Dubuque celebrates its local small businesses and the contributions they
make to the local economy and community. Among companies that plan promotions on
Small Business Saturday, 92% reported that the day helps business stand out during
the busy holiday shopping season; and
WHEREAS, small businesses employ 47.8% of all private-sector employees; and
WHEREAS, 90% of consumers in the United States say Small Business Saturday has had a positive
impact on their community; and
WHEREAS, 43% of consumers who reported "shopping small" at independently-owned retailers and
restaurants on Small Business Saturday, did so with friends or family; and 83% reported
encouraging others to also shop or dine small; and
WHEREAS, the most-reported reason for consumers' awareness of the day to shop and dine at
small, independently owned businesses was to support their community with shoppers
spending an estimated $17.8 billion across the country on Small Business Saturday in
2018 with 67 cents of every dollar spent remaining in the local community; and
WHEREAS, advocacy groups, as well as public and private organizations, around the country have
endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF
OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM
THE 23RD DAY OF NOVEMBER 2019 AS:
"SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND ENCOURAGE OUR RESIDENTS TO SUPPORT SMALL
BUSINESSES AND MERCHANTS ON SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY AND THROUGHOUT THE
YEAR.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Dubuque to be affixed this 18th day of November
