Northeast lowa Community College Alumni Hall of Fame.Since the founding of the College in 1966,
many students have distinguished themselves in their profession and community.The Alumni Hall of
Fame is a celebration in excellence,recognizing outstanding alumni and giving witness to the value of
an NICC education.
This year's induction ceremony will be held on Monday, November 18,2019 in the Community Rooms

Lorraine L. Borowski
Practical Nursing, '77
A commitment to service, community, caring for
others and support for literacy formed Lorraine
Borowski's career. A 1970 sociology graduate
of Luther College, Lorraine sought a new career
in healthcare. After she completed her nursing
education at Northeast Iowa Community College,
Lorraine worked as a nurse in Winneshiek
Memorial Hospital.
In 1992, Lorraine changed her career path and
joined the staff at the Decorah Public Library and
was named director in 2001. During her tenure,
she moved the library through technology
advancements, future planning, facility
improvements and improved public access to
community resources. Lorraine brought Decorah
City Council meetings to public access television
for 14 years and developed her knowledge of
city government. The Iowa Library Association
honored Lorraine with the Member of the Year
Award in 2016.
Community members encouraged Lorraine to
consider running for public office, and she was
elected the first female mayor of Decorah in
January 2018. She has served on the Winneshiek
County Community Foundation Board, the
Decorah Chamber of Commerce and the Iowa
Library Association.
Lorraine has two grown daughters,
Beth Borowski and Sarah Strahm.

Kathy J. Moritz, R.N., M.S.N.
Associate Degree Nursing,'90
Hard work, dedication and devotion to family
defined Kathy Moritz while growing up as one of
11 siblings on a 600 -acre farm in rural Harpers
Ferry. Kathy knew that caring for patients was
her true calling. While earning her nursing
degree at the College, Veterans Memorial
Hospital in Waukon hired Kathy as a staff nurse.
She continued her education and earned a
Bachelor of Science of Nursing and Master
of Science in Nursing, with an emphasis on
education, from Viterbo University,
La Crosse, Wis.
She joined the Mayo Clinic Health System
— Franciscan Healthcare in 1991. Kathy's
knowledge, expertise and management skill
brought her into leadership positions, and to the
position of chief nursing officer at Winneshiek
Medical Center in 2017. She leads and manages
all nursing departments at the hospital, including
policies, programs and services for nursing.
Through her service in healthcare, Kathy leads
with humility, and emphasizes education and
empowerment among her team, staff, patients,
families and the community.
Kathy serves her community as a Lansing Fish
Days volunteer, RAGBRAI volunteer and is
active in her parish, Immaculate Conception
Church in Lansing. Kathy and her husband,
Dave, have two daughters, Allison and Arin,
who work as registered nurses for the Mayo
Clinic Health System.

Trish Shelton, R.N., B.S.N.

A lifelong native ofWaukon,Trish Shelton
envisioned a career in healthcare from the
beginning. After high school she explored health
information technology education before turning
her attention to nursing. Her education through
the College established her career, beginning
as a charge nurse for Good Samaritan Nursing
Home in Waukon and, in 2000, joining the staff
of Veterans Memorial Hospital. Trish worked in
the emergency room, obstetrics and medical -
surgical capacities.
In 2005, she expanded her nursing role by
teaching education courses to nurses and staff at
the Veterans Memorial Hospital. As an educator,
Trish provided Advanced Cardiac Life Support
(ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support
(PALS) training. Veterans Memorial promoted
Trish to nurse manager in 2016. She advanced
her education and earned a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing from Upper Iowa University in 2016
and is currently enrolled in the Master of Nursing
in Informatics from Capella University.
Trish and her husband, Corey, are co-owners of
JaDecc's, a cell phone business in Waukon. The
Sheltons have three daughters; Marissa, Caitlin
and Abby.

Julie G. Huiskamp, Ph.D.

Coordinator of Learning Resources,'99-'02
After serving as a librarian, consultant and
human resources director in the private
sector, Julie Huiskamp joined Northeast Iowa
Community College in 1999. Her 17 -year career
at the College transformed her perception and
understanding of the critical role NICC serves in
higher education.
In 2002, Julie was named executive director of
human resources and served as interim provost
for the Calmar campus from 2011-2012. During
her career, she led a successful transition to
interest -based bargaining for the Support Staff
Association and Higher Education Association,
served on the planning team that guided
the first successful bond levy in 2007 and in
numerous administrative capacities.
Julie continues to serve the College and
community in many ways. She is 1st vice
president and chair of the governance committee
for the NICC Foundation, and will begin her term
as foundation president in April 2020. She is a
long-time Foundation Golf Tournament sponsor
and volunteer.
Julie and her husband Dan, a retired
veterinarian, have two sons, Kelly (wife
Christine) and Payne (wife Brianne). The
Huiskamps have three granddaughters.

Larry Benn
Automotive Mechanics, '85
Since childhood, Larry Benn has loved to
fix and repair equipment, tractors, engines
and machinery. He earned his high school
equivalency diploma through the College and
after graduating from the Auto Mechanics
program, began working, full-time, at
Dyersville Beckett, Chevy and Olds.
In 1994, Larry purchased two acres of land in
Dyersville to establish the site of Auto Tech, a
thriving customer -focused family business. His
successful business employs 12 staff members,
and his wife Cheryl — a graduate of the NICC
Accounting Specialist program — manages
Auto Tech's accounting.
Larry believes in the importance of technical
education and funds auto mechanics
scholarships to three graduating seniors annually
at Beckman, Western Dubuque and Maquoketa
Valley high schools. Auto Tech gives to local
organizations and charities, including Relay for
Life, Toys for Tots and the Dyersville Food Pantry.
Throughout the year, Larry produces custom-
made collector's items for area fundraising
campaigns. The Dyersville Area Chamber of
Commerce named Auto Tech Business of the Year
in 2017.
Larry and Cheryl Benn have two children, Levi
(wife Jenn) and Mercedes (husband Garrick), and
two granddaughters.

Gregory Conway
Marketing Management,'81
Gregory Conway's education at the College
provided the foundation for a successful
business career, and his passion for retail,
growing sales, purchasing and building
relationships guided a 40 -year career
at Theisen's Supply, Inc. Today, he is the
company's soft -lines purchasing manager
for the 24 -store retail chain. His career has
progressed from sales, to department lead
positions, store supervisor and, in 1987, to the
corporate office in Dubuque. As purchasing
manager he leads a team of buyers and their
staff, with direct responsibility for sales, profit,
merchandising and vendor negotiations.
Gregory embraces Theisen's work ethic and
philosophy to give back and support the
community. Through his leadership at Theisen's,
he supports the Washington Neighborhood
Community Garden, including giving of his own
resources to fund projects, tools and supplies.
His support of this cause, and of many others, is
motivated by local needs and ensuring that money
stays in the communities Theisen's serves.
Gregory is devoted to caring for his family and
parents. He and his wife, Regina, live in Dubuque.
He has three stepchildren and two grandchildren.

Rick Steines
Fire Science, '01
Emergency Medical Technician, '83
Making a difference in his local community
inspires Rick Steines and his commitment to
emergency management and firefighting.
Now fire chief for Dubuque Fire Department,
Rick began his career as a volunteer
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and
rescue technician for Bellevue Fire Department
in 1979. He joined the Dubuque Fire
Department in 1985, receiving promotions to
lieutenant, fire captain and then assistant fire
chief in 1999, before appointed chief in 2014.
Rick served on the Dubuque County Fire
Association's fundraising campaign for
the $2.6 million Dubuque County Emergency
Responder Training Facility, which was completed
in 2006. As fire chief, he has written many
successful federal Assistance to Firefighter Grant
proposals that provide funding for firefighting
equipment and new technologies that help his
team manage fire hazards.
Rick serves as a member of the Emergency
Management Association Commission, the
Dubuque County Joint 9-1-1 Service Board and
served as past chair of the 9-1-1 Public Safety
Committee. Rick and his wife, Abby, have three
sons; Ben, Alex and Jake.

PEOSTA • OUTSTANDING RETIREE SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT
Jerome J. Kramer
Working with students to solve math problems
and overcome their anxieties drives Jerry
Kramer's career in education. As a teacher he
also ensured that every student has a positive
experience in school. Jerry started teaching
math and physics in 1962 at several high schools,
including Holy Cross, St. Paul High School in
Worthington, Western Dubuque and as one of the
first faculty members when Beckman High School
in Dyersville opened in 1966. After teaching
high school, Jerry and his wife, Lois, began dairy
farming in 1973. The Kramers farmed for 27 years
Learning Center Math Instructor,'99-18 until the physical demands of dairying became
increasingly difficult.
In 1999, Jerry joined the math faculty at the
College. During his career, Jerry welcomed
students on campus every morning, provided
assistance as an instructor and met outside of class
to improve students' math skills. Jerry retired in
May 2018, returned that October and continues to
assist part-time.
Jerry is a member and volunteer for the Iowa
Remote Control Airplane Club and Flying Fields.
Jerry and Lois Kramer have been married 56 years.
They have four children — Cheryl, Chris, Lynn and
Nicole — and 10 grandchildren.
