Roll Call: Present: Anthony Allen, Chair Gerald Hammel Jason Keeler Jay Schiesl, Vice Chair Adrienne Breitfelder Absent: Miquel Jackson Erin Muenster Kate Parks Staff: Carol Spinoso Discuss and Respond to Bias Incident The Commission met to discuss how to respond to a recent bias incident. On September 21, 2019, the Police Department received a call reporting racial insensitive graffiti at one of the City's open air pavilions. The group felt the need to educate the community that graffiti such as this is a crime. There was discussion as to whether the op-eds were effective. They felt the op-eds serve the purpose of conveying to the community that we are listening, but in terms of getting the message out to the perpetrators, they likely don't read the TH. It was suggested that they connect with other commissions such as Park & Recreation, Housing, and The neighborhood associations, or possibly Jerelyn O'Connor, to work towards being more proactive. It was suggested they keep writing op-eds that are also more proactive, and urge discussion during the public forum event during the upcoming Race Conference. Commissioner Schiesl moved that the DHRC write an op-ed that is more proactive to educate the community on bias motivated incidents in our community. Seconded by Hamel. Roll call: Anthony Allen Yes Gerald Hammel Yes Jason Keeler Yes Jay Schiesl Yes Adrienne Breitfelder Yes Motion carried. Suggestions for the op-ed will be solicited at the October 14'h meeting when a full commission will be present. Adiournment: Commissioner Schiesl motioned and Commissioner Breitfelder seconded to adjourn. All in favor. The meeting ended at 5:17 p.m. Minutes approved as submitted: Minutes approved as corrected: Page 1 of 1
