WHEREAS, the fight for women's suffrage, from the first women's rights convention in
1848 to enfranchisement, lasted more than 72 years, with women and men
from all walks of life, political views and demographic backgrounds asking
for the right of women to voice their opinions at the polls; and
WHEREAS, lowa was the 10t" state to ratify the 19t" Amendment on July 2, 1919 and
Tennessee was the 36t" state to ratify the 19t" Amendment, making it the
law of the land on August 26, 1920 whereby millions of women were
enfranchised; and
WHEREAS, the ratification of the 19t" Amendment ensured women could more fully
participate in our democracy and fundamentally changed the role of women
in the civic life of our Nation.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA,
ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO
HEREBY PROCLAIM THE YEAR OF 2020 A COMMEMORATION OF THE 100t"
ANNIVERSARY OF THE PASSAGE OF THE 19t" AMENDMENT TO THE
CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES,
"IN FURTHER PROMOTING THE CORE VALUES OF OUR
DEMOCRACY AS PROMISSED IN THE U.S. CONSTITUTION"
AND CALL UPON OUR CITIZENS TO RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE THIS HISTORIC
MI LESTONE.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have
hereunto set my hand and caused the
Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to be
affixed this 6t" day of January 2020.
