INTRODUCTION
This memorandum serves to introduce the inaugural report of community feedback
gathered through an ongoing survey effort conducted by the Branding and
Communications Working Group of the City of Dubuque's Arts & Culture Master Plan.
BACKGROUND
The Community Enactment Strategy of the City of Dubuque's Arts & Culture Master
Plan established "Conduct a market study of perceptions of Dubuque's arts and culture
scene" as a short-term priority of the Branding and Communications Working Group
(B&C WG) of said plan.
Survey development was initiated in the Fall of 2019 in collaboration with a Loras
College Sports Marketing course and subsequently refined by the B&C WG. The
Working Group released the `Reflections on Dubuque's Arts & Culture Scene' survey on
April 16, 2020 via multiple City of Dubuque communication channels. Volunteers of the
Master Plan, recipients of City arts and culture grant funds, and specific City
departments continue to be encouraged to distribute and engage their audiences.
This survey does not have a set closing date. It is designed to gather feedback on an
ongoing basis to continually engage residents and gauge attitude changes over time.
The B&C WG continues to expand outreach with the survey. Starting July 2020, the
B&C WG will provide quarterly reports to funded arts and culture partners, the Arts
Commission, and City leadership. The accompanying report is a follow up to the
inaugural report shared with the City Manager on June 16, 2020. The report does not
provide an evaluation of that data regarding recommendations or next steps. Links
highlighted throughout the report provide access to additional PDFs that capture
responses to open-ended questions. Demographic information is being collected and
will be included in subsequent reports.
In this report, results are divided between `Arts Audience' and `General Audience'. The
survey was released under two separate URL's and shared accordingly to allow the
B&C WG to compare responses from those actively engaged in the arts and those that
may not be.
