Van Milligen, City Manager FROM: Marie L. Ware, Leisure Services Manager SUBJECT: BE A.W.A.R.E Presentation —An Educational Component of Pet-Friendly Community DATE: July 13, 2020 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to recommend approval for Robin MacFarlane, owner of That's My Dog to present information regarding her Be A.W.A.R.E. educational campaign at the July 20th City Council Meeting. This campaign is an initiative of the Pet- Friendly Work Group because of its focus on education for both pet owners and non-pet owners. BACKGROUND The City Council at their 2018 goal setting session adopted Pet-Friendly Community: Policy Direction and Actions as a 2018-20 Policy Agenda High Priority. The guidance from the Council included that this would not be only about pets in parks but would engage partners in how we could become a more pet-friendly community. At the November 19, 2018 City Council meeting the City Council approved a process to create a Pet-Friendly Community Action Plan. A Pet-Friendly Work Group was established and met biweekly to review information, facts, and data, listen to presentations, review drafts, work on the Community survey, call a sampling of landlords and research information. The Pet-Friendly Community Assessment was completed by the Work Group and received and filed by the City Council on August 5tn 2019. The Pets in Parks Ordinance change approved by the City Council went into effect on July 1, 2020. The work group has continued to meet regularly to continue to the goal to become a more Pet-Friendly Community. Their focus after the pets in parks ordinance work was to move to education for the community of both pet owners and non-pet owners. 1 DISCUSSION Robin MacFarlane is and has been an active member of the Pet-Friendly Work Group. She is the owner of That's My Dog, a board and training program where professional dog trainers teach dogs how to be well mannered and obedient. Robin has been working diligently developing an educational campaign product of her business that serves to create better communities through education. As Robin has developed her campaign, she has shared its progress and asked input of the Pet- Friendly Work Group. This campaign has been developed and fully paid for by Robin MacFarlane. The Pet-Friendly Work Group has appreciated all the work and effort she has put into this campaign. The Be A.W.A.R.E. campaign helps humans understand how to respectfully share green space and public areas with companion animals. In doing so, this strengthens the human-animal bond and supports other community members to feel respected and safe. She has created her own website at www.awarepetowner.com. Robin plans to partner with the City to promote responsible pet ownership through her Be A.W.A.R.E. campaign. She would like to present her educational information about the five (5) steps of the Be A.W.A.R.E. pet protocol to the City Council and community on July 20t", 2020. ACTION STEP I respectfully request approval for Robin MacFarlane to present That's My Dog's Be A.W.A.R.E. educational campaign at the City Council meeting.
