Proclamation_Bike to Work Week 2010
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the month of May has been designated as National Bike Month by national,
state, and local governments, in order to promote greater public awareness
of bicycle operation and safety education in an effort to reduce accidents,
injuries and fatalities; and
WHEREAS, the American Discovery Trail and the Mississippi River Trail intersect in
this beautiful state, making Iowa a true crossroads of national routes, and
the future home of the Lewis and Clark Trail; and
WHEREAS, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest, and longest bicycle touring event in the
nation, which demonstrates cycling is good for Iowa and Dubuque’s health,
tourism, economy, and environment; and
WHEREAS, thousands of paved Iowa trails are being developed, connected and
complemented with over 1,350 miles of off-road trails. Communities from
across Iowa, including Dubuque, are seeking “Bike Friendly Community”
status from the League of American Bicyclists through implementation of
marked bike lanes, bike parking, and other accommodations; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF MAY 17-21, 2010 AS
“BIKE TO WORK WEEK”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, and encourage all citizens to take advantage of
Dubuque’s many biking amenities and take part in this week’s events.
