Proclamationi_AmericCorps Week 2010 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and throughout our history citizens have stepped up to meet our challenges by volunteering in their communities; and WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps national service program has proven to be a highly effective way to engage Americans in meeting national and community needs since its creation in 1994. Each year AmeriCorps provides opportunities for more than 85,000 citizens across the nation, including approximately 60 members in Dubuque, to give back in an intensive way to our community, our state, and our country; and WHEREAS, since 1994, more than 637,000 men and women, including over 600in Dubuque, have taken the AmeriCorps pledge to “get things done for America.” AmeriCorps members have served more than 30,000 hours for more than 30 non-profits in Dubuque, helping to improve the lives of our community’s most vulnerable citizens, strengthen our educational system, protect our environment, and contribute to our public safety; and; WHEREAS, last year, AmeriCorps recruited and supervised more than 2.4 million community volunteers for the organizations they serve; and WHEREAS, after their terms of service end, AmeriCorps members remain engaged in our communities as volunteers, teachers, public servants, and nonprofit leaders in disproportionately high levels; and WHEREAS, AmeriCorps Week (May 8-15, 2010) is an opportune time for the people of Dubuque to salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their service, thank AmeriCorps' community partners, and bring more Americans into service. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF MAY 8-15, 2010 AS “AMERICORPS WEEK” IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA. AND URGE CITIZENS TO THANK AMERICORPS MEMBERS AND ALUMNI FOR THEIR SERVICE AND TO FIND WAYS TO GIVE BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES.
