J. Michael Ironside / 2260 Coates Street
Sewer claim additional information
CLAIM:
It is our belief that a City of Dubuque water main break on Coates Street on or about June 7,
2018 undermined the earth beneath the sewer line from 2260 Coates Street causing the line to
drop and need significant and expensive repair. The sewer line was inspected with a snake
camera the previous year by Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Dubuque and shown to be clear and free
of any issues. Following are details of inspection prior to the said incident, the water main
break, and the subsequent issues and repair.
SERVICE/INSPECTION
October 10-11, 2017—Greg Schadle, owner of Mr. Rooter and Don Green, Service Technician
for Mr. Rooter, using a snake cam found a break in our sewer pipe approximately four feet from
the foundation of the house at 2260 Coates Street They contacted McDermott Excavating who
were able to dig the following day, October 11, 2017. The Mr. Rooter team found the break—a
partially collapsed day tile about five feet from the exit point of the house—and was able to
replace the damaged section with PVC. At that time, the Mr. Rooter team was able to run the
snake cam the entire length of our sewer line with no issues to the connection with the City of
Dubuque main sewer line running down Coates Street.
WATER MAIN BREAK
June 7, 2018—A City of Dubuque water main broke under Coates Street, across the street from
2260 Coates. Water appeared at the surface of the asphalt street, running along the curb on
the north side of the street toward the storm sewer. Water also "bubbled up" at the edge of the
asphalt on the south side of the street, adjacent to the driveway and yard of 2260 Coates. A
City of Dubuque crew arrived that day, excavated, and made a repair to the broken water main.
Repairs to damaged asphalt in that area were made at a later date. I
SEWER LINE ISSUES AND REPAIR
June 7, 2020 — During a service call, Kyal Haas, Service Technician for Mr. Rooter ran a snake
cam down our sewer line at 2260 Coates Street in an effort to diagnose possible reasons for
sewer backup issues. At about 30 feet out, the sewer line began to drop with the cam
descending into standing water. Mr. Rooter owner, Greg Schadle arrived to consWt. It was
determined that a section of sewer line between about 30 and 40 feet from the house had
dropped somewhere belween 6 and 8 inches and would need to be replaced. Schadle
remembered that we had inspected the line at the [ime of the October 20'17 repair and found no
issues in the currently damaged section. It is our belief that the water main break of June 2018
undermined the earth beneath the sewer line from 2260 Coates Street causing the line to drop.
The Mr. Rooter team contacted MCDermott Excavating for estimates to excavate toward
replacing the damaged sewer line.
June 23, 2020 — McDermott Excavating pertormed excavation to expose the existing sewer pipe
for replacement, completed by Mr. Rooter Service Technician, Kyal Haas. During the course of
excavation work, it was determined that a break had also occurred in the City of Dubuque main
Coates Street sewer line, at the junction of the line from 2260 Coates StreeL This was probably
another result of the adjacent water main break in June 2018. City personnel were consulted
and McDermott Excavating completed the needed repair.
