WHEREAS, the nation's 120,000 nonprofit arts organizations, the National Endowment for the
Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the nation's 4,500 local arts
agencies, and the arts and humanities councils of the 50 states and the six U.S.
jurisdictions have traditionally recognized the month of October as National Arts
and Humanities Month; and
WHEREAS, the arts and humanities enhance and enrich life in Dubuque today for all residents
through education, creativity, and livability; and
WHEREAS, Dubuque's arts and culture sector dedicates itself to using the power of arts and
culture to make Dubuque a more connected, just, and inclusive community; and
WHEREAS, the arts and humanities stand ready to heal, strengthen, rebuild, and reimagine
our community as Dubuque recovers from the impacts of COVID-19; and
WHEREAS, Dubuque's nonprofit arts and culture sector strengthens our economy generating
$47.2 million in total economic activity annually, supporting the full-time equivalent
of 1,530 local jobs, and generating $5 million in local and state government
revenue; and
WHEREAS, the City makes an annual direct investment of $285,000 in grants to Dubuque's
non-profit arts and cultural organizations, enriches resident and visitor experiences
with the annual Art on the River public art exhibit, and furthers the integration of
arts and culture throughout the community with the ongoing implementation of the
Arts and Culture Master Plan.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2020 AS:
"ARTS AND HUMANITIES MONTH"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND CALL UPON OUR CITIZENS TO CELEBRATE AND
PROMOTE THE ARTS AND CULTURE ORGANIZATIONS, BUSINESSES, AND WORKERS
IN DUBUQUE.
