SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week Supporting Documentation THL CITr OF Du8 E Mr�ster��icce ae the rl4ississippi ������������ Whereas, lead exposure to children, particularly those under the age of 6, can result from multiple sources and can cause irreversible and lifelong health effects; and Whereas, over 80% of the City of Dubuque's housing stock was constructed prior to 1978 when lead levels became highly regulated in residential paint; and Whereas, children's blood lead level testing rates have decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is the primary way of detecting elevated blood lead levels; well-child visits have resumed and it is critical to have children tested for lead poisoning as the symptoms are commonly unapparent; and Whereas, lead poisoning is preventable; the key is to keep children from coming into contact with lead, especially lead-based paint; and Whereas, there are simple steps that can be taken to protect all family members from lead-based paint hazards in the home, including the City of Dubuque's Lead Paint Hazard Reduction Program; and Whereas, the City's HUD Lead Paint Hazard Reduction Program has made 1,300 housing units lead safe since 1997, with a total of 1400 to be completed by September 2022.
