Dear City Representative:
As a business owner with property in Dubuque, Iowa, I am disturbed that the City
is proposing a reduction in Fire and Police protection. Local businesses, as well
as private citizens, rely on the City to provide complete and responsive law
enforcement, safety, and protection. The current proposal would result in
unacceptable levels of these vital elements.
Businesses, as well as governments, face unexpected expenses and changes in
revenue stream, and are sometimes forced to cut spending. However, the
concept of cuts across the board is not a reasonable approach. Instead, a
careful evaluation of all expenses is in order, in which all services and expenses
are ranked in order of importance to the community. Certainly Fire and Police
protection are vital to every person and business, not only for Dubuque, but for
Dubuque County and surrounding areas.
Dubuque has made much progress in the last couple of decades, and is now on
the cusp of even more economic development and toudst opportunities. Is this
the message we want to send to our new and future business investors? Is this
how we want to treat visitors to our community? Remember, many visitors come
back often, and sometimes decide to relocate their home or business. Dubuque
must remain an attractive alternative.
Our city seeks growth, and needs young families to help that growth. Let's not
force our own youth to seek jobs elsewhere. Let's continue the campaign
"Come Back to Dubuque". Please reexamine the budget; don't cut Fire and
Police funding!
Sincerely,
Carolyn Haupert
