City Council Meeting ITEM TITLE: Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens 40thAnniversary Proclamation SUM MARY: On behalf of the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens Board of D irectors SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Arboretum 40th Anniversary Proclamation Supporting Documentation THL CITr OF Du8 E Mr�ster��icce ae the rl4ississippi ������������ WHEREAS, 2020 is the 40t" Anniversary of the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens; and WHEREAS, in 1980 members of the Tri-State Men's Garden Club formed the Dubuque Arboretum Association, a non-profit that agreed to an initial ten-year lease on from the City of Dubuque on 16.5 acres of Marshall Park; and WHEREAS, over the next forty years the Arboretum grew to 56 acres that now contains a rose garden with All-American rose selections, a formal English garden, Japanese garden, herb garden, and more, available 7:00 am to dusk, 365 days a year; and WHEREAS, the Association has constructed and cared for structures including the Lagen-Beulow Gazebo, Packard Memorial Amphitheater, Heinemann Visitor Center, and numerous other buildings used for all aspects of growing and maintenance of the gardens; and WHEREAS, the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a living museum that achieved museum status as a part of the Association of Midwest Museums and is home to art and sculptures throughout the grounds; and WHEREAS, there is no entrance fee to the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Garden, making it an inclusive attraction open to everyone thanks to the support received through memberships, memorials, grants, private donations and in-kind services; and WHEREAS, the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a labor of love developed and maintained by 363 volunteers logging 22,869 hours, welcoming 55,000 visitors a year from almost every state in the nation and 5 international countries. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SPECIAL RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION OF DUBUQUE ARBORETUM AND BOTANICAL GARDEN AND ALL ITS MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS ON ITS 40T" ANNIVERSARY IN 2020.
