Libary Board of Ti^ustees Update
From the Meeting November 19, 2020
Present: Christy Monk, President; Pam Mullin, Vice-President; and Trustees, Robert
Armstrong, Greg Gorton, Rosemary Kramer, Victor Lieberman, and Patty Poggemiller
• The Board approved expenditures. The end of October marked the passage of
33% of the fiscal year. Expenditures were at 29% and revenue was at 20% of
proj ections.
• Library visits in October averaged 353 per day. Last October the average was 755
per day. The people who are visiting the library, however, are checking out
materials. The number of visits to the library has decreased significantly more
than the number of checkouts. This decline represents people that formerly visited
the library to sit and read, take laptops to areas and sit to use them, and attend
programs or meetings who are no longer doing this.
• YouTube continues to grow (86% compared to October of last year). Strong use is
associated with access to complement crafting kits that library staff members have
created.
• Digital materials have also increased in use. Comparing the full months of the
pandemic, April— September 2020 to April— September 2019 use of e-book and
e-audio increased 56.8%.
• Since the Giving Tree program began, 34 children's accounts have cleared about
$1,600 in lost material fees. All families that signed up for the Giving Tree were
able to have the children's accounts cleared. Contact has begun to families that
are eligible for the Giving Tree program inviting participation. There are about
850 names and to date, 100 families have been contacted resulting in seven new
participants.
• Work has begun on a self-guided art tour throughout the library. TravelStories is
an app, and once downloaded will not require internet access for use. The app
uses geotags making it possible to start or stop the art tour wherever one wishes. It
can include graphics as well as audio and it is possible to have a link for a
donation. The cost is quite high so additional vendors will be identified prior to a
discussion of funding options.
• Amy Muchmore was promoted to the position of Adult Services Manager. The
Library now has five vacancies: a Librarian position, two part-time positions in
Maintenance, a part-time Library Assistant in Circulation, and a part-time Library
Aide position in Youth Services. Interviews are ongoing.
• The Board discussed the pros and cons of the library remaining open during the
COVID pandemic as infection rates have increased. The Board reviewed the
safety protocols and procedures in place. Board members agreed that compliance
by library visitors to wear masks and stay six feet apart from one another is
critical to the library's ability to remain open. Most patrons are compliant. The
Board agreed that library employees should have no tolerance for visitars who
will not remain fully masked during their entire visit and should be asked to leave
if not willing to have their nose and mouths fully covered. The Board voted to
remain open unless the Governor issues a proclamation recommending libraries
close. The Director will call a special Board meeting to revisit the decision if a
proclamation is made, or if something happens at the locallevel that requires
additional discussion. In the meantime, the Director will work on a backup plan to
deliver services if the library closes.
