PO WERED BY S USTAINABLE D UB UQ UE
This summer while camping with my family, the forest became quiet,
the sky grew dark and a gush of wind blew most of our campsite
deeper into the forest while we rushed to shelter in a cinderblock
bathroom . Later we learned it was called a "Derecho" wind storm and
we learned about the post-event lack of services we've come to rely
on . We relied heavily on our "camp neighbors" as we retrieved our
belongings, moved trees, safely crossed downed powerlines and tried
to navigate towards home with no cell service. We learned a lot
about resiliency that day and in the days following and it made me
consider how Dubuque's neighborhoods would bounce back, post
disaster, be it wind storm, health pandemic or otherwise.
We know many Dubuquer's face daily barriers to resiliency (access to
healthcare, located food deserts, high un - or under-employment )
which are exacerbated by climate change (specifically flooding , air
quality and heat ) and more recently, COVID-19.
The Teen Resiliency Corps set out with the goal to address resiliency
issues at the neighborhood level through empowerment and interactions
while also addressing daily needs, especially those which have surfaced
due to COVID-19.
We hope you enjoyed meeting the teens who live in your
neighborhood and we hope we've inspired you to meet more of your
neighbors! We are so grateful for the time and energy you put into
having discussions with us, filling out surveys and sharing a little
piece of your lives! We hope you enjoy this coloring book full of
original artwork by local artist, Mia Nottrott.
If you ' re interested in learning more about our Teen Resiliency Corps
or Sustainable Dubuque, email info@sustainabledubuque.org
or call 563.690.6038!
Thank you !

YOU ARE HERE

REACH OUT TO YOUR NEIGHBORS VIA EMAIL OR PHONE
1 If you do not have their information, leave a note on their door
explaining who you are, where you live, and how they can get
in touch with you. Be sure to wash your hands and wipe down
the note first.
WHEN YOU SEE PEOPLE OUTSIDE...
MAKE IT A POINT TO TALK TO THEM
One-minute conversations are a big deal when it comes to
building relationships in our neighborhood. Use the Block
Map visual included in this toolkit to write down and
remember the names of your neighbors.
ASK YOUR NEIGHBORS HOW THEY ARE DOING IN THE
MIDST OF THIS CRISIS
Asking simple and thoughtful questions is more important
now than ever:
• How are you and your family doing in light of all of the
changes?
3 • How has this impacted your job and your company?
• Have you noticed any silver linings as a result of the
adjustments that this crisis has forced us all to make?
• Is there anything that you need or that I could help with?
• Have you been able to find flour or toilet paper anywhere?
Real relationships are two-way streets—don't hesitate to ask for
help and to share honestly about how you are feeling and doing.
BUILD A NEIGHBORHOOD DIRECTORY
Compile contact information of the people that live in
closest proximity to you and share it with everyone. Include
names, addresses, phone, email, and even the names of
children and/or pets if possible.
    .

VIRTUAL MEET UPS
Host a virtual gathering for your neighbors. Use Zoom, Google
Hangout, etc. to connect with the people who live on your
street or in your apartment complex.
NEIGHBORHOOD SIT INS
Have everyone bring their own chair and drinks. Be sure to
space everyone six to ten feet apart as you enoy a nice
conversation in an outdoor setting.
SOCIAL DISTANCE WALKS
Take a walk with your neighbor(s) while staying 6-10 feet
from each other. This may seem awkward at first, but it's a
great way to model distancing to others while getting some
healthy excercie.
NEIGHBORHOOD ONLINE WEBINARS
Invite your neighbors to do an online webinar around
parenting, marriage, or any topic you think would be of
interest to you and to them.
VIRTUAL TRIVIA NIGHT
Use a video confrencing service to host a trivia game with
your neighbors. There are a lot of great apps and resources
that provide fun questions and content.
