Prevenas, Acting Leisure Services Manager McAleece BMX Bicycle Course April 12, 2010 Dubuque Wald AI- AmrdcaCIty 1111 ' 2007 The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with details and anticipated costs associated with the development of a BMX bicycle course. During the March 26, 2010 meeting discussing summer activities for teens we suggested the development of a BMX bicycle course. Sales of BMX bikes have increased locally during the past few years with a large percentage of these sales to middle school age children. BMX bikes differ from mountain bikes by their smaller frame and wheel size and are used for jumping and doing aerobatic tricks. However, this course could also be utilized by beginning mountain bikers as a learning area. A BMX bike track was included in the Fiscal Year 2008 C.I.P. at the McAleece Recreation Area adjacent to the skate park. The facility was not constructed and the funds were utilized for other projects. Leisure Services Department staff recommends the BMX bike course be constructed at McAleece this summer with volunteer bike enthusiast's assistance and teens to develop the clay jumps and ramps. The enthusiasts are willing to teach /train riders on safe riding and teach them the maintenance required on the course. Project expenses include the following: • 10 truck loads clay material @ $200.00 • Equipment rental to move clay material into mounds, ramps, et cetera • Overtime costs for Park Division staff to be on site for equipment operation during evening times when teens are available • Material and hardware to build a wooden starting ramp • Connecting and installing a water line from Petrakis baseball field to BMX course for purpose of moistening the clay surface $ 2,000 1,000 1,000 1,000 1, 000 $ 6,000 BMX bicycle course, page two Since this project is not included in the current fiscal year budget it will be necessary to use funds from other C.I.P.'s and we suggest the following: Security cameras (remaining balance of $25,000) $ 3,500 Highway 20 water line ($5,000 project not needed) $ 2,500 ACTION REQUESTED The action requested is for your approval to develop this project for the summer season.
