Dear Grant Review Committee,
I write today in support of Four Mounds as a potential recipient of the Johanna Favrot Fund for
Historic Preservation.
Four Mounds Foundation was created in 1986 as a non-profit to manage and steward lowa's
last remaining gentleman's farm. The estate was willed to the City of Dubuque from Elizabeth
Burden, with a purpose that it be preserved for public good and education. The estate is owned
by the City of Dubuque, but Four Mounds has 100% responsibility for all aspects of revenue
generation, operations, and programs.
Over the past 35 years, Four Mounds has restored and preserved the natural, architectural, and
historical resources of the estate and engaged the community through hands-on education and
service learning. Four Mounds is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and
welcomes more than 30,000 people to its site annually which features over 100 acres of
riverfront bluffs, prairie, savannah and woodlands as well as 17 historic structures. This project
will enable Four Mounds to continue to achieve a vision of a living and accessible site through
an updated Cultural Landscape Plan and a 3D Model that will provide tools to elevate site
interpretation and interaction.
Four Mound is a historic and cultural treasure in Dubuque and provides high-impact programs.
The City of Dubuque is proud to partner with Four Mounds and we encourage the National Trust
to support this exciting project.
