City Council Meeting ITEM TITLE: AutismAcceptance Month Proclamation (April 2021) SUMMARY: On behalf of Hills and Dales SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Autism Acceptance Month Proclamation Supporting Documentation T1IL CLTY OF Du8 E Master��icce nie ihe rblississippi ������������ WHEREAS, autism is a pervasive developmental disorder affecting the social, communication and behavioral skills of those affected by it, and WHEREAS, as more health professionals are proficient in diagnosing autism, more children are being diagnosed on the autism spectrum, resulting in rates as high as 1 in 54 children nationally, and WHEREAS, we recognize the efforts of Hills & Dales that offers Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy, the Gold Standard and Evidence Based treatment for children and adolescents with an autism diagnosis, and WHEREAS, while there is no cure for autism, it is well documented that if individuals with autism receive treatment early in their lives, it often is possible for those individuals to lead significantly improved lives, and WHEREAS, individuals with autism often require a lifetime of specialized and community support services to ensure their health and safety and to support families' resilience as they manage the psychological and financial burdens autism presents, and WHEREAS, an awareness and acceptance effort is underway to educate parents, professionals and the general public about autism and its effects. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF APRIL 2021 AS: AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND URGE ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH ACTIVITIES, IN ORDER TO BECOME BETTER EDUCATED ON THE SUBJECT OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS.
