City Council Meeting ITEM TITLE: Earth Day Proclamation (April 22, 2021) SUMMARY: On behalf of Sustainable Dubuque SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Earth Day Proclamation Supporting Documentation 'CHE CI'fY pF Du8 E Masferprece on the Misszssrp}�i ������������ WHEREAS, we are all stewards and beneficiaries of the Earth, and its healthy and diverse ecosystem is vital to a thriving community, a vigorous local economy, and a sustainable environment; and WHEREAS, human activities are causing widespread climate change to the detriment of natural resources, biological diversity, and human health and happiness; and WHEREAS, the impacts include pollution, loss of wildlife species, damage and loss of habitat, food and water, weather extremes and worse flooding, human health crises, and loss of livelihoods; and WHEREAS, we must use creativity, innovation, and education to solve these problems, with local communities leading the way by encouraging sustainable energy and water use, sustainable land use and transportation, and waste reduction, reuse and recycling practices; and WHEREAS, there are compelling aesthetic, economic, and social reasons for local governments to initiate and support these practices; and WHEREAS, Earth Day offers people a unique opportunity to make, renew, and celebrate commitments that will protect quality of life and the Earth for generations to come. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM APRIL 22, 2021 AS "EARTH DAY" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND URGE ALL RESIDENTS TO REFLECT ON HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO A HEALTHY, SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT AND MAKE DUBUQUE AN EVEN BETTER PLACE TO LIVE, WORK, AND RAISE A FAMILY.
