PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the bicycle is an economical, healthy, convenient, and environmentally sound form of
transportation and an excellent tool for enjoyment of Dubuque's scenic beauty and
throughout the month of May, the residents of Dubuque and its visitors will experience
the joys of bicycling through educational programs, commuting events, or by simply
getting out and going for a ride; and
WHEREAS, Dubuque's road and trail system attracts bicyclists each year, providing economic health,
transportation, tourism, and scenic benefits; and
WHEREAS, creating a bicycling -friendly community has been shown to improve citizens' health, well-
being, quality of life, and access to opportunity, improving traffic safety, and reducing
pollution, congestion, and wear and tear on our streets and roads; and
WHEREAS, Tri-State Trail Vision, the League of American Bicyclists, schools, businesses, and civic
groups will be promoting bicycling, greater public awareness of bicycle operation and
safety education in an effort to reduce collisions, injuries, and fatalities and improve health
and safety for everyone on the road during the month of May 2021; and
WHEREAS, Businesses and Communities across Iowa are seeking "Bike Friendly Business and
Community" status from the League of American Bicyclists through further
implementation of on -street bike markings, bicycle parking and other accommodations.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF
OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM
THE WEEK OF MAY 17-23, 2021 AS
"BIKE WEEK"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND ENCOURAGE RESIDENTS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF
DUBUQUE'S MANY BICYCLING AMENITIES AND TAKE PART IN THE WEEK'S EVENTS.
