Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting April 22, 2021
Present: Christy Monk, President; Pam Mullin, Vice -President; and Trustees, Robert
Armstrong, Greg Gorton, Rosemary Kramer, Victor Lieberman, and Patty Poggemiller
• The Board approved expenditures from the operating budget and purchase cards.
• March marked 75% of the fiscal year lapsing. Expenditures were at 62% and
revenue collected was at 114% of projections.
• A formal offer was extended to Nick Rossman for the position of Library Director
and he accepted. Nick will begin work on Monday, May 24th. Susan Henricks
will work with him full-time for the following two weeks. Following this, she will
be available throughout the rest of June for additional training that is identified, or
consulting. She officially retires on July 2.
• The operating budget has been unfrozen and advertising is taking place for two
full-time Youth Services Library Aides, one for working with children and
outreach, and the other to work with teens. Recruitment is also underway for an
intern in Information Technology. A recommendation has been made for a part-
time custodian. Final interviews will take place next week for the position of a
full-time Library Aide in Adult Services.
• The installation of the Story Book Walk is scheduled to begin on May 11. June 51h
at 10:30 a.m. is the date of the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Story Walk
located at the 22" d Street Bee Branch Greenway. This project was funded in part
by the DRA and the Library Foundation.
• The library van has a new wrap and the material return boxes on Bluff Street,
Asbury Plaza Hy-Vee, and Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School are next. The design
has been approved.
• Ninety-seven works of art covering three floors of the library have been
photographed. Each work also includes a description and artist information. This
was submitted to Orpheo, the vendor that is creating the app for the self -guided
art tour. As part of this project numbers are placed by each work of art. Visitors
can take a complete tour, one to ninety-seven, or simply input a specific number
to learn more about an individual work of art. Updating labels, or creating labels
where none have existed is the ideal to have a comprehensive collection. Some
works in the collection require conservation. The Board of Trustees approved
using Enrich Iowa (state aid funding) to support the project. The tour is being
funded by the Library Foundation.
• A second meeting with the Dubuque Community School District regarding the
use of student IDs as library cards was held and the details of a memorandum of
understanding (MOU) was discussed. Once complete we can begin to work on the
implementation of this project, which will involve I.T.
• The operating budget was restored and the library has no frozen positions. With
this in mind the Library Board of Trustees approved the extension of hours to the
minimum required to meet accreditation. On June 1 library hours will change
to: Monday - Thursday, 9:00 a.m. — 7:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 9:00 a.m.-
5:00 p.m. and Sunday Noon — 5:00 p.m. When programs last longer than 7:00
p.m., which will happen fairly often when in -person programming returns, staff
will manage this and close the library.
