The Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager
Temporary meeting room names for Grand River Center
On June 2, 2003, the City Council approved a list of temporary names for the meeting
rooms in the Grand River Center. Based upon input from Platinum Hospitality and the
Dubuque Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Assistant City Manager Cindy
Steinhauser is recommending the temporary names be revised to be consistent with
industry standards for conference and convention facilities. The revised name
recommendations are as follows:
City side A
City side B
City side C
River side A
River side B
River side C
It is important to note that these are temporary names and will not affect the city's ability
at a future date to provide these rooms as commemorative naming opportunities for
potential donors.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

MEMORANDUM

City Manager
Cindy Steinhauser, Assistant City Manager
Termporary meeting room names for Grand River Center
Introduction
The purpose of this memorandum is to request City Council approved of a revised set of
temporary meeting room names for the Grand River Center.
Discussion
On June 2, 2003, the City Council approved a list of temporary names for the meeting
rooms in the Grand River Center. The names were as follows: the Dubuque Room, the
Ice Harbor Room, the Shot Tower Room, the Steamboat Room, the Towboat Room and
the Paddlewheel Room. In reviewing these names Platinum Hospitality has expressed
some concern over these names as they relate to the operations of the facility. This
includes marketing the names to event holders such as brides and meeting room
organizers to expediting maintenance orders for set-up and take-down. You will recall
that Platinum Hospitality has a 10-year management agreement with the City of
Dubuque to manage the operations of the Grand River Center.
It has been suggested that the meeting rooms be renamed to be consistent with the
naming in the ballroom. Currently the ballroom is named as follows: ballroom A,
ballroom B, ballroom C and ballroom D. This is consistent with industry standards for
conference and convention facilities. Based upon these concerns, I would recommend
that the meeting rooms be renamed as follows: city side A, city side B, city side, C, river
side A, river side B and river side C. I have reviewed these names with Platinum
Hospitality and the Convention and Visitors Bureau and they are in agreement with the
recommendation. These temporary names will not affect the City's long-term plan to
provide these rooms as commemorative naming opportunities for potential donors.
Recommendation
I recommend that the City Council approved the revised names for the Grand River
Center meeting rooms as suggested.
