Over the past couple of decades the Parking Division has welded parking meter
poles off of a welder that is mounted on an old trailer. Over the past couple of
years, we have kept the old trailer together with the welder after the frame had
broken and other problems. Now, the welder has gone bad and it is so old that
we cannot get parts any longer. It is a welder that has a generator built into it so
it is quite expensive. In conjunction, with the Parking Division adding parking
Tots, we are constantly having a maintenance vehicle shortage. We are many
times borrowing the parking enforcement vehicles to run for parts or to do quick
repair trips. I had not budgeted for an additional vehicle as we were getting
along but is seems as though it would be an opportunity to upgrade our
equipment now due to the failure to the welder and condition of the trailer. As
mentioned, also with the shortage of a vehicle for the maintenance staff and the
new ramp coming on board, this adds to this being the smart time to make the
upgrade. Therefore, I am requesting your approval to pursue the purchase of a
new pickup with a utility box. In addition, I will have to purchase a
welder /generator unit that will be permanently mounted in the rear of the pickup
for all of our welding. We do a lot of welding with meter pole replacement and
repair. This will allow storage of all welding equipment and supplies. I am
estimating the total cost to be in the area of $40,000. There would be no trade in
for this additional unit.
Currently we have only 2 pickups; one 2 wheel drive and one 4 wheel drive.
Both of these units are in use each day constantly with collection of meters and
repairs. I am sure this will also help with better use of work hours with an
additional vehicle available for other duties.
The funding would be as follows:
Surface Sealing of 5th Street - 730 -1382 Completed last year with $11663
remaining
Door Replacement 5th Street Ramp 730 -2048 Completed this Spring with
$15983 remaining.
5th Street Ramp Lighting Evaluation 730 - 2161 -No Longer Needed - Will be
retrofitted to same lighting as new ramp -study actually done as part of lighting
selection for the new ramp. $20,000.
There are sufficient funds remaining in the listed CIP's to cover the cost of the
purchase of the additional vehicle and equipment.
