Secure Our Schools GrantMasterpiece on the Mississippi TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Council Members FROM: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager SUBJECT: Secure Our Schools Grant DATE: June 30, 2010 Dubuque krititi AH4medcaCity 11111 ! 2007 The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) provides grant funding for its Secure Our Schools (SOS) Grant Program. Through this program, law enforcement agencies may apply for grant funds to support school safety and security programs within the agency's service area. The law enforcement agency serves as the grantee for the funds but the money goes to support the school safety and security projects. The SOS grant is for two years and requires a 50% match. If approved, this grant would provide $49,096 to the Dubuque Community School District and $52,622.76 to Holy Family Schools, for a total grant amount of $101,718.76. The two entities would then be responsible for providing equal amounts to "match" the grant funds. The Dubuque Police Department and the City of Dubuque would not be liable for any of the matching funds. Chief of Police Mark Dalsing recommends City Council approval of the submittal of the 2010 Secure Our Schools Grant application in the amount of $101,718.76. I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council approval. MCVM:jh Attachment cc: Barry Lindahl, City Attorney Cindy Steinhauser, Assistant City Manager Mark M.
