Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
Jul v22, 2010
Present: President; Diann Guns, Paula Connors, Elizabeth Leeper, Fred Miller,
Kristen Smith and Mike Willis
Excused: David Hammer
• The Board held an election of officers. Diann Guns is President for FY11;
Paula Connors, Vice President; Kristen Smith, Secretary
• Committee appointments were made: Operations: Fred Miller and Mike
Willis; Planning: Elizabeth Leeper and David Hammer; Relations: Paula
Connors and Kristen Smith. Diann Guns will be the representative to the
28E Agency. Paula Connors and Mike Willis have been appointed to
represent the Board at the Library Foundation
• June marks the end of the fiscal year. The Library came in 3.6% under
budget and this will change slightly with the 13 month financial report.
Savings were realized in gas and electric utilities as well as revenue,
which came in at 33 percent over projections, and contributed over
$31,000 toward our operations budget. These areas covered areas of the
budget which, earlier, had caused some concern.
• FY 2010 was quite an amazing year, not only because it broke all records
for number of items checked out and number of visitors, but that this took
place under challenging conditions facility wise. The number of check
outs came in at 632,192 — a 4 percent increase, and the number of visits
was 286,416, an 11 percent increase. Internet use was up 3 percent and
the circulation of laptop computers was up 51 percent over FY09. We
now have 35 laptop computers available for in -house check out to better
meet demand, so it is likely we will see another increase in this area. An
average of 12 library cards was issued every day that the library was
opened, a 4 percent increase over FY 09.
• Library applications for 5 positions number over 900, of which 400 were
for the Library Assistant position. Interviews have been held with in -house
candidates and offers extended. The number of positions remaining is in
keeping with the advertisements. The goal is to have all interviews
completed by August 10
• A construction update was discussed and a moving date was set for
Wednesday, August 25 — Friday, August 27. During this time the library
will be closed. Susan will be obtaining estimates on hiring movers for the
collection so staff can focus on the return of materials from storage.
• A resolution on the "bubbles" of the third floor has been reached. Tricon
Construction has offered to extend their warranty on the floor for five
years. The Board agreed to this and the City Attorney will draft an
agreement.
• Steve Brown, City Engineering, arranged for a visit with Mr. Al Bowman for
an expert opinion to help determine the cause of the elm veneer
installations which have failed. Mr. Bowman will be documenting his
findings and recommendations for follow up.
• The Library has received a bequest from the estate of Robert Mahr. It will
be placed in a trust fund until the Board can determine how it can best be
used.
