In response to over 1, 000 of the attached announcements mailed to schools, artists, galleries, etc. , some 80 persons submitted pre -entry intent of submitting a piece for the competition. Each of these persons received a special packet of various items all aimed to provide the artist with a "sense of Dubuque". The deadline is 5 PM today, and at the time of writing this letter, we have received 20 maquettes. Through the courtesy of Ed Sheppley, all of the pieces are being displayed in one of the first floor stores in the Dubuque Building. It will take several days to uncrate and assemble the items, and some time during the week of October 29 the judges will begin their assignment. We are meeting Monday with the Dubuque Art Association Sculpture Com- petition Committee to complete the arrangements for the reception and pro- gram at which time the winner will be announced. We will also endeavor to arrange some way for the public to take a closer look at the items after the judging has been completed. We find that a number of entries do not include all of the required docu- mentation (photographs, firm proposal to fabricate and erect within the prescribed cost limitation, etc.). This, we will need to clear up this coming week prior to the judging. i .a Honorable Mayor and Members of City Council Page 2 i y You will find that the entries represent a wide range of interests and a variety of techniques. It would appear that the City selected an excel- lent method of securing something distinctive for downtown. Sin erely yours, f Gent M. Wittenberg - GMW/vt ' a Enclosure i T,5 5 Y
