Frank Morrison as a special con- sultant to advise and to collaborate with the planning architect to be retained for the Five Flags Project. Mr. Morrison is a theater archi- tectural historian presently associated with National Independence Historical Park in Philadelphia. It further appears that the Executive Committee will interview three local and three out-of-town architects sometime during August and September. The Five Flags Committee is making plans for a promotional program in December (after the completion of the United Way Drive) in order to reach all folks who have not had the opportunity to make a contribution to the project. The total pledged to date is $661, 109. 26, which is 50.85% of the total goal of $1,300,000. We have voiced today to the Executive Committee some concern about the condition of the roof and heating plant of the Orpheum. The roof has been patched for a good number of years and needs complete replace- ment. We have advised the gentlemen that we are not in a position to make this type of expenditure. We are in the process of obtaining bids, and some arrangement may be made with the Five Flags people to do the necessary work. We have some fear that leakage may do irreparable damage to some of the interior. The heating plant is also on its final -2- Mr. Gilbert D. Chavenelle July 31, 1972 leg, and with the adjoining buildings immediately to the north gone, there is considerable difficulty in heating the theater during extremely cold weather. We have provided some of the former owners of the property, (Mrs. William Gallogly, Mr. Nick Yiannias) with a copy of the chrono- logical history of the site, asking for their comments. We have also located a nephew of a former owner and operator of the theater. This nephew, Nate Rosenthal, worked for a good number of years in Dubuque, and is presently a part time Membership Chairman for the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce. We have also sent him a copy of the history of the site for his review. Sincerely yours, u // gy& , Gent M. Wittenberg. i ("/ GMW/vt
