Sports and Recreation Sub-Committee Report_12.16.1976SPORTS & RECREATION SUB -COMMITTEE REPORT December 16, 1976 General suggestions from the sub -committee on sports & recreation regarding the facilities for the new Five F1ags.Civic Center. The committee recognizes that use of the facility for sports events, other than ice related activities, will be limited primarily to large spectator events. However, in addition to the ice activities, we recommend that plans include equipment and facili- ties for basketball, tennis, volleyball, indoor track, boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics. The committee is also cognizant of the great demand for handball and racquet ball courts within our community. We feel that such courts, along with health type club facilities (sauna, weights, etc.) would be a revenue producing activity and recommend consideration of this type of activity for the lower level. The following suggestions are partially in response to the programming proposals submitted by the architects dated December 14, 1976. 1. LOCKER ROOMS: We suggest that two 1 four smaller rooms, would b and toilets be included in minimal, additional footage units as well as a drinking be available in each of the black board be available as 2. COACHES OFFICE: 3. 4. a rge locker rooms that can be subdivided, opposed to e advisable. When subdivided, accomodations for showers each unit. The area of 250 squarefeet per locker room is if possible. Adequate hair dryers be included in all fountain. A team training room area, at least for taping, two or four locker rooms. Either a permanent or portable needed in locker rooms. We question the need of a coaches office perse. We suggest that one such office be developed into an officials dressing room with showers and toilet. STORAGE: We are concerned of the availability of storage rooms to the arena area. Easy accessability is vital -- large equipment, such as portable basketball back board and standards, cannot be wheeled through a door, down a hall, and a sharp turn into a storage room. Doors to storage rooms must be at least 6 feet wide and as tall as possible -- 10 feet was recommended. Space should be provided to store such items as portable basketball back -boards and standards, volleyball standards, tennis stand- ards, gymnastic equipment, boxing platform, tennis carpet or surface, etc. We assume suitable storage space will automatically be programmed for storage of the portable floor, insulator floor, ice dasher boards and screen, ice surfacer, etc. PRESS, RADIO, TV: We recommend that knowledgeable media individuals be contacted for these requirements. -2- 5, SCORE BOARD: to players as well as fans is important. Either a 4-face board and/or twin single face boards at either end of the arena be provided. Visual accessabiliun layers names, numbers, etc. would to the effectiveness of the facility. Timing and scoring capabilities An electronic board for messages, announcements, p add measurably for both hockey and basketball is required. 6. ADDITIONAL AREAS: It would be desirable and important to provide: a. First aid station for spectaaby tor news children while parents are b. Lounge or play skating. 7. TENNIS: preside of Dubuque Tennis Association, See enclosed letter from Paul Britt, pre for tennis recommendations. -3- COMMITTEE MEMBERS Jon Davison Athletic Director University of Dubuque Tel. 557-2271 Bob Mullen Athletic Director Loras College Tel. 588-7112 Gene Pierotti Athletic Director Wahlert High School Tel. 583-9771 Terry Trueblood Dept. of Recreation Bunker Hill Tel. 588-1478 Harlan Epland YM-YW Comm.
