Gentlemen:
As you know, the architects are at work on the design for the Five Flags
Civic Center. The total concept envisions the restored Orpheum theater
connected to a new exhibition hall with a promenade facing on a plaza at
the lower end of Town Clock Plaza.
Last year the American Society of Landscape Architects presented to the
City of Dubuque the Merit Award for Town Clock Plaza. In April of this
year Mrs. Nixon presented to our Mayor the American Association of
Nurserymen Municipal Landscaping Award for Town Clock Plaza. These awards
represent a significant achievement in a total design concept and are a
great compliment to our city administration.
As we proceed with the development of the area across from the Five Flags
Center, it is most important that consideration be given to an architectural
design which can further enhance the whole Plaza area and compliment the
Five Flags Civic Center. The Five Flags executive committee respectfully
requests that the development of the block across from the Center be done
with concern for the architectural integrity of the whole two block area.
We have a unique opportunity to create an area of great beauty and
architectural significance already recognized by the awards given to the
City of Dubuque.
Sincerely,
Five Flags Executive Committee
