Minutes_Arts and Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission 7 27 10MINUTES ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS ADVISORY COMMISSION Tuesday, July 27, 2010 Library Auditorium 3rd Floor, Carnegie -Stout Library, 360 W. 11 Street, Dubuque, IA 52001 Meeting was called to order at 4:30 p.m. following staff assurance of compliance with the Iowa Open Meeting Law. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of Tuesday, June 10, and Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Motion by Hemmer and seconded by Kames to accept the minutes. Motion carried 6 -0. Commissioners present: Paul Hemmer, Louise Kames, Marina O'Rourke, Sue Riedel, Julie Steffen, and Geri Shafer. Staff Present: Jerelyn O'Connor, Jan Stoffel NEW BUSINESS 1. Swearing in of new Commissioners. Marina O'Rourke was welcomed as a new Commissioner. Chair Shafer administrated the oath of office to Hemmer, Kames, O'Rourke, and Riedel. 2. Election of Officers. In the past, the position of Vice Chair is held by the Commissioner who will become the chair the following year. Since the previous Vice Chair Paul Kohl is no longer on the Commission, nominations were taken from the floor for a Chair to act through July 1, 2011. Present Chair Geri Shafer was nominated to continue another year as Chair. Kames moved and Riedel seconded to select Shafer as Chair. Motion carried 6 -0. Julie Steffen was nominated to assume the Vice Chair position. O'Rourke moved and Shafer seconded to select Steffen as Vice Chair through July, 2011. Motion carried 6 -0. Sue Riedel offered to continue as Secretary. Kames moved and Steffen seconded to reappoint Riedel as Secretary through July 1, 2011. Motion carried 6 -0. OLD BUSINESS 1. Fall Planning Session. Since not all Commissioners could attend the regular date of August 24 for the fall planning session, it was moved to August 31 instead. Chair Shafer and Vice Chair Steffen will work with staff on the structure and agenda for the planning session. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION 1. Voices from the Warehouse. Shafer reported that much volunteer help will be needed for the event and encouraged Commissioners to help. Commissioner Kames will be one of the featured artists. INFORMATION SHARING 1. Riedel was congratulated on her appointment to the Iowa Arts Council Board. 2. Kames and Stoffel reported on the Americans for the Arts Baltimore Conference in June. Main issues addressed were the National Arts Index and Dubuque's involvement in the pilot Local Arts Index project, the role of technology for arts groups, and the understanding of and building younger audiences through new models. 1 3. • Stoffel reported that actual work on the Local Arts Index had been minimal at this point. 4. Appreciation letters from grantees were acknowledged. ADJOURNMENT Hemmer moved and Kames seconded to adjourn the meeting at 5:30 p.m. The next meeting will be held on August 31, 2010, at 4 p.m., at the Carnegie Stout 3` floor Auditorium.
