They were instructed to see Connie about paying any fees and their licenses would be
issued and mailed to them.
All five left the meeting at this time.
New business.
Mike Weitz of Weitz Signs addressed the board about the electrical code requirements on
installation of listed sign equipment.
John Monroe of Underwriters Lab talked about the listing process and how it works with
U.L.
Board members asked questions of Mike Weitz and John Monroe about costs and time
frames.
It was decided by the Electrical Code Board that Building Services needs to notify all
licensed sign installers that when they apply for a permit for an electrically connected sign,
that the electrical inspector will need to verify that the sign they will be installing has been
built to the appropriate national standard; and that the correct listing sticker will be affixed
to the sign in a “visible from grade” location.
This will apply to all new installations and to any removed and reinstalled signs, but not to
repairs of existing signs.
As this is not a change of any city ordinance, but simply a clarification of existing
regulations, no council action was deemed necessary nor any vote by board.
This compliance need not start for ninety (90) days from the date of this mailing, which
should allow more than enough time for the licensed sign manufacturer and installers to
receive the necessary accreditation. After the ninety (90) days, the Building Services
Department staff will be inspecting for the existing mark. The Board also stated that the
notice shall include names, addresses, phone numbers of the primary listing agency, i.e.
U.L., CSA, and Intertek.
