Van Milligen, City Manager FROM: Cindy Steinhauser, Assistant City Manager SUBJECT: Iowa Great Places Video DATE: September 29, 2010 Dubuque killetd M-Amedca City IIIIII 2007 Introduction The purpose of this memorandum is to provide information on the city of Dubuque Iowa Great Places Designation. Discussion In October 2006, the city of Dubuque was recognized as an Iowa Great Place. Included in this recognition was funding for three projects including: $250,000 for restoration of the skylight at the Carnegie Stout Public Library; $250,000 to fund expansion of the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium; and $34,000 in funding for bi- lingual hike /bike trail signage. In addition to this funding, applications for other state grants submitted to the State of Iowa for projects in Dubuque were given additional points because of our status as an Iowa Great Place. As a result, Dubuque also received $150,000 in funding for streetscape improvements for the Historic Millwork District. On October 22, 2010, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs will be holding their annual Iowa Great Places Banquet. This year they will be featuring the cities whose Iowa Great Places funding is now complete, including the city of Dubuque. Dubuque will continue to be recognized as an Iowa Great Place, however, our project funding and additional points for grant applications has expired. As part of the 2010 banquet ceremonies, Dubuque was asked to provide a 3- minute video highlighting our great place. Attached is a copy of the video which features Mayor Buol, NMRMA Director Jerry Enzler, Library Director Susan Hendricks and Planning Services Manager Laura Carstens showcasing our Iowa Great Places Projects.
