2. Discussion of Veterans Preference for Civil Service Employees
Personnel Manager Randy Peck explained to the Commission that there had been a
change to the Veterans' Preference section of the Civil Service Law which added some
periods of military service, such as Panama, Grenada, Lebanon and Military Reserve
Service, to the preference arrangement for civil service employees. The Civil Service
Commission certified a list of cendidates for Police Officer on June 6, 2002 and there
may be candidates on the reserve list who served during the periods affected by the
change. He requested Commission authorization to contact those candidates on the
reserve list to see if any of them qualified for Veterans' Preference points. If someone
did qualify, it could move that person from the reserve list to the eligibility list for the
position of Police Officer. If this were to happen, the Commission would then be asked
to amend the certified list to include the affected candidates.
Commissioner Wertzberger moved to authorize the Personnel Manager to contact
those persons on the reserve list to determine their eligibility for Veterans' Preference
points and, if so, to add the appropriate points to that individual's score. Seconded by
Kluesner, passed unanimously.
There being no further business, it was moved and seconded to adjoum at 3:13 p.m.
